"Valor Award to go to Fireman's Family"

John McNamee, a Cleveland firefighter who was fatally injured after rescuing two persons, then giving his oxygen mask to a man trapped during the Hawley House Hotel fire in 1974, will be honored tomorrow.

McNamee's widow and three children will be presented with an award established in his honor by Cleveland Fire Fighters Local 93 and the city.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Willard Park Fire Fighters Memorial, E. 9th St. and Lakeside Ave. The presentation will also begin Fire Prevention Week which continues until Oct. 17.

McNamee's body was found lying across a 68-year-old resident of the Hawley House Hotel, 229 W. St. Clair Ave. Fire officials believe the man survived because McNamee gave him his oxygen mask.

McNamee, 31, led at least two other persons to safety in the Dec. 7 fire before finding the trapped man. McNamee died that night, and the man died four months later of burns.

The award marks the first time the city of Cleveland and the fire fighters' local have honored a fireman for valor, says attorney James M. Andrews.

The award will be presented to firemen who perform acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty, he said.
