GMGC James Patrick Vetzel passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2017 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. James was a resident of Tucson, AZ and had previously lived in Rossville, IN. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Vetzel of Rossville, IN; daughters Christina Vetzel and Jamie Vetzel of Mississippi, son Matthew Vetzel (wife Jo Lynn) of Lafayette, IN; daughter Catherine Vetzel Brouwer (husband Aaron Brouwer) of Delphi, IN; daughter Cecile Vetzel Girton (husband Brian Girton) of Lafayette, IN; daughter Andria Battaglino Workman (husband Eric Workman) of Lafayette, IN; and daughter Angela Battaglino Aumage (husband Nathaniel Aumage) of Indianapolis, IN. He is also survived by his sister Linda Vetzel Garrard (husband Paul Garrard) of Tucson, AZ; brother Michael Vetzel (wife Phyllis) of Sierra Vista, AZ; and sister Melissa Vetzel Wild of Grapevine, TX. He was a loving grandfather to his many grandchildren. Also surviving are nephew Christopher Van Vleet of Tucson, AZ; Angelique Van Vleet of Lewisville, TX; niece Brandy Harris of Scurry, TX; nephew Ronald Johnson also of TX. He was preceded in death by his parents William T. And Mary Wood Vetzel.

James was a decorated 21 year Veteran of the United States Navy. He received many medals and honors including the Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Ex-Peditionary Medal, Expert Rifle Medal, Expert Pistol Shot Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal, as well as four Letters of Commendation. He was very proud of his military service and enjoyed spending time with his fellow veterans. He worked 21 years for Purdue University R.E.M. Department after he retired from military service.

James was an avid collector of firearms. He enjoyed practicing his marksmanship and liked going to the range with his children. He had a great love for animals and was also an established breeder of Maine Coon cats. He traveled a great deal and would trek across the country in his RV on the old scenic highways. He was a history buff and enjoyed taking his children to museums and battlefields when they were younger, especially interested in WWII. He also made his own fireworks and would put on a big Independence Day display for family and friends, to the great delight of his grandchildren.

Military Honors will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday March 26, 2017 follow by a Scripture Service at Evergreen Mortuary & Cemetery, N. Oracle & W. Miracle Mile. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. He will be later laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
