Bernice was born in Sheldrake on January 18, 1930, a daughter of the late Frank and Cecil (Hilkert) Delong. She worked at Willard State Hospital from 1949 to 1954, and then worked as a cook and waitress at Jays Soda Bar for more than 20 years. She then went out on her own to run Lackey’s for 10 years, and rounded out her career at KT’s in Willard. Bernice had been a member of the American Legion Post #463 Auxiliary since 1969. She loved her cats, chickens and gardening, Bingo and find-a-word puzzles.
She is survived by her five children, Nelson (Brenda) Coleman of Alabama, Doris (Bernard) Reilly of Romulus, David Coleman of Romulus, Roxanna Baker of Waterloo and Christine Burke of Romulus and 9 grandchildren; her brother Frank Delong and sister Francis Steen. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Coleman and by her siblings, Marcus, Clyde, James, Guy and Winfield Delong, Beatrice Rosecrans, Blanche Christensen and Bertha Ferris.
