Salem, Oregon - After a very long battle against cancer, Jim died peacefully at home with family at his side. Born in Conde, South Dakota to John and Ina Bertsch, Jim was raised on a farm and attended a one room country school. He graduated from Conde High School where he enjoyed competing in basketball, baseball and track. Jim graduated from University of South Dakota and after an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Jim sold pharmaceuticals in the Midwest. After entering the insurance industry, Jim relocated his family to Oregon in 1980.
Five siblings preceded Jim in death; Veronica, Dorothy, Leo, Floyd, and Lyle. Five siblings also mourn his passing; Genevieve Hoops, Alice (Jim) Rentz, Lucile Von Wald, Gerald (Mavis) Bertsch, and Tom (Edith) Bertsch.
Preceding Jim in death were his wife Margaret (Maggie Saunders) Bertsch and oldest daughter Georgine (Gigi) Naggatz. Surviving are children Mike (Cindy) Bertsch, Mary (Tim) Massey, Patrick (Chrissie) Bertsch, Jamie Bertsch, and Melissa Bertsch, 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be March 15 at Crown Memorial. Services will be Thursday, March 16 at St. Vincent DePaul Church. Rosary will begin at 9:30 am with Mass at 10 am. Jim will be laid to rest next to his wife Margaret in a 1:30 pm burial at Willamette National Cemetery. A 4 pm Celebration of Life reception will take place at The Grand Hotel. (201 Liberty St SE).
