Lillie Mae Butler Hales was born Sept. 13, 1879, to Richard T. and Iva Cavitt Butler at Sacramento, California.
She was married to Ora Chester Cavitt July 28, 1898 [her mother's cousin]. Soon after they went to Rushville, Indiana, where a son, Wilbur, and a daughter, [Ora] Virgil, were born. After the death of Ora Cavitt in 1900, the widow with the two children went back to California, where on Sept. 10, 1904, she was married to Harlie Stoner. To this union were born John L., Harland C., and Richard Stoner. Mr. Stoner died Oct. 6, 1910, and in the fall of that year she and her family moved to Galata, where Mrs. Stoner homesteaded. On July 10, 1912, she was married to Frank K. Hales, who preceded his wife in death on Nov. 28, 1918. To this union were born four children, Edna M. [1913], Lenora, Thomas F. [1916], and Mary D. Hales [1919].
Mrs. Hales acquired other land to add to her homestead and she lived on this farm until she retired in 1947 and came to Kalispell.
Mrs. Hales died May 31 in a local hospital at the age of 79 years.
Beside her husbands, she was preceded in death by two children, Richard Stoner and Lenora Hales. Surviving Mrs. Stoner are seven children, Wilbur M. Cavitt of Kalispell, Mrs. Virgil Brand of Yelm, Wash., John L. Stoner and Harlan C. Stoner, both of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Edna Hammersmith and Thomas Hales of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Mary Rubedew of Superior; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Powell and Mrs. Melba Seamas of Farmington, Calif., a brother, Vital Butler of Roseville, Calif.; 26 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
