Douglas Wayne Cooper was born on September 9, 1934, in Greenville, S.C., to Clarence Broadus Cooper and Lula Craft Cooper.

He was reared in Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School where he was a member of the football and track teams. He graduated from Mars Hill Junior College (now Mars Hill University) in Mars Hill, N.C. He earned a B.A. degree in voice in 1957 from Furman University in Greenville where he was a member of Phi Mu Alpha, Theatre Guild, Furman Singers, and Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Mr. Cooper was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in a guided missile battalion at Thule Air Force Base in Greenland.

His post-military career was with Greenville County Law Enforcement. He served in multiple roles, including warden of the Givens Correctional Institute. He retired after 30 years of dedicated service.

He was known for his love of family, church, music, fast-pitch softball, and the Furman Paladins.

Mr. Cooper died on Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

He was survived by his son Ashley Cooper and wife Frances; his grandchildren Blair Cooper, Sarah Cooper, and Joshua Cooper; his sister Frances Cooper Edwards and husband Purdue; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings Lt. Charles Herbert Cooper, Clarence Wilbour Cooper, Margaret Cooper Sightler, Alma Jeannine (Jean) Cooper White, and Gerald Alton Cooper.

A crypstside service was held on Saturday, March 18, 2017, in Woodlawn Memorial Park's Memorial Mausoleum. A visitation followed at the mausoleum.
