Pioneer Physician and Surgeon of Los Angeles, California. Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern California School of Medicine for 25 years, from 1885 to 1910. Los Angeles County Coroner from 1870 to 1873, and again from 1876 to 1877. Joseph Kurtz, M.D., received his medical training at the Universities of Heidelberg and Giessen, and came to America in 1862. He served as a surgeon for the Union Army at Baltimore Hospital during the Civil War. He came to California in 1867, first to San Francisco, and then on to Los Angeles where he established his medical practice. Remembered for his numerous charitable and civic activities, he was a founding member of the Los Angeles County Medical Association, founded in 1871. He was member of the Los Angeles Board of Education for 13 years, from 1874 to 1887. He was a surgeon at the Sisters Hospital, now known as St. Vincent Medical Center, and the German Hospital, now known as Promise Hospital of East Los Angeles. He was also a founder and director of the Security Trust and Savings Bank, once known as the German-American Savings Bank. Husband of Ida (Felbert) Kurtz, they married in Los Angeles in 1868, and together they had five children.
