Information for this page was taken off of marriage, death, and census records. Marjorie Woods of Lombardy also shared family history. Jane Vanderzande provided some of her research and the photo in September of 2018. Researcher Susan Garske Sylvester

According to the Fox Family history which Majorie Woods shared:
"Mr. and Mrs. Finlayson immigrated from Scotland early in the 18th century and settled in Bathurst near Perth. (I think she meant the early 19th century) Their children were Mary (Mrs. Peter Belonger), Agnes (Mrs. Henry McCargar), and their sons, John, William, and Marshall. I could not find when Ann Finlayson's husband died or what was his first name. She will marry Francis Lumbar one of the first settlers in the South Elmsley District in May 8, 1929 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Perth, Ontario. Today the village of Lombardy took its name from Francis Lombar (Lumbar). It was first called Lombardy Corners and then Lombardy.

Looking at the census records it appears Ann had 4 children with Francis Lombar. The Francis Lombar (Lumbar) family can be found on the Canada census of 1851. Also her children from her first marriage can be found on this census record. I found her son's both William and Marshall Finlayson living in Oxford, Grenville, Ontario in 1851 Canada census record and I found John Finlayson living in Augusta, Grenville in the 1861 Canada Census records. Her daughters Mary Belonger was living in Elmsley, Leeds, Ontario in 1851 and her daughter Agnes Finlayson McCargar was living in Oxford, Grenville, Ontario in 1851.

The following are the children she had with her husband "Unknown" Finlayson.

1. Mary Finlayson Belonger was born in 1815 in Scotland and died on January 7, 1869 in Burgess, Leeds, Ontario. She was buried in the Lumbar family cemetery.
I believe the Finlayson brothers lived for a while in Grenville County.

2. John was born in 1819 in Scotland. John can be found on the 1861 census in Augusta, Grenville. He was married to Eliza Ann born in Canada. She was 38 years old. Also living with them were two children: William age 9 and Florence Ann age 4.

3. Willliam was born in 1820 in Scotland. He married Phebe McCargar on October 22, 1844 in Oxford, Johnston, Ontario. They both were living in Oxford, Grenville, Ontario. Rev B. Nankevill married them. On the 1851 census record page 188 (Ancestry.com) I found the family living in Oxford, Grenville, Ontario
William age 31, born in Scotland, living with his wife Phebe age 27, born in Canada. They were farming. Their religion was W. Methodist William dies in 1900 in Aurora, Hamilton, Nebraska and is buried in Aurora Cemetery.

4. Marshall was born in 1823 in Ontario. Marshall on March 13, 1849 married Eliza Malvin in Dundas County, Ontario. On the 1851 census they can be found in Oxford, Grenville, Ontario. Marshall was 27 years old, born in Canada, and farming. His wife Eliza was 22 years old and born in Canada. She died in March 23, 1895 in Aurora South Dakota.

5. Agnes Finlayson McCargar was born in 1824 in Ontario. She will marry Henry McCargar (Her brother William's Wife Phoebe was his sister) on July 7 1845 in Johnstown, Ontario. In the 1851 census the family was living in Oxford, Grenville, Ontario. Henry was farming and they lived in a framed house. The family was W. Methodist and they all had been born in Ontario. He was 34 years old and Agnes was 29 years old. Living with them were the following children Thomas age 6, John age 4, and Hugh age 2. Also living with them was their niece Agnes Belonge age 13 years old. Agnes Finlayson dies on October 9,1899 in Aurora, Hamilton, Nebraska.

The following are the children in the union of Ann had Francis Lumbar:

1. Charles Born 1830 Ontario Died March 8, 1862 Elmsley, Leeds, Ontario

2. Charlotte Born March 23, 1835 Ontario

3. Julian Born 1836 Ontario

4. Alexander Born 1843 Ontario

After husband Francis Lumbar died in 1863, the final census of 1871 for Ann also tells a story. Ann Lumbar was living In Elmsley, Leeds, Ontario. She was 73 years old and born in Scotland. She was Presbyterian. Living with her was her granddaughter Julia Lumbar age 16. She was Presbyterian and it says her origin was Scottish. I do not have a death date for Julia's mother but she was not living with them on this census record.

I could not find Ann Lumbar's death date but she died after the 1871 census. It only makes sense she would be buried in the family cemetery with her husband, her own daughter Mary Belonger, her grandson John Belonger, her granddaughter Janette Belonger Fox and her great-granddaughter Margaret Belonger. When I took pictures of the cemetery I missed the foot stone that the Leeds and Grenville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society had noted. It had the initials of A. L. I believe this was Ann's final resting place. Jane Vanderzande provided a picture of this stone for the memorial in 2018.

Grand daughter Julia Lumbar will go on to marry Robert Patterson and have 4 children. Her husband will die young but the last census record has Julia in 1921 living in South Elmsley, Leeds, Ontario. I could not find her death date or burial place.
