--The second daughter of Charles A. Porter and wife Corille Avant, she grew up in the Dilworth and Latta Park areas of Charlotte.
--Graduate of Central High School and she received her BA in Religion and Philosophy from Queens College (now University) in Charlotte.
--She married Dr. Christopher Hood on June 24, 1950 in Charlotte; they were married 62 years. During her husband's years in medical school, residency and the army, they lived in Philadelphia, PA, Denver, Colorado, Atlanta, GA, and Columbia, SC. They settled in Charlotte. The couple were proud parents of 4 children: Amy, Renwick, Coleman, and Timothy Hood. She had 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
--A near fatal car accident in 1965 led to many surgeries and caused her many physical challenges.
