Ralph Beets, 42-year-old Marysville township farmer, was fatally injured and Rex Edward Cherry, 21-year-old Osawatomie mortician's assistant, sustained severe facial lacerations last Tuesday night about six o'clock when the 1941 Mercury sedan driven by Cherry sideswiped a pickup truck in which Beets and his bride of five days, the former Ethel Jackson, were riding, both machines overturning several times. The crash occurred on U.S. highway 169, two miles north of Hillsdale. Mrs. Beets suffered bruises and possible internal injuries in addition to several shock.

Beets died in an ambulance summoned from the Wilcox Mortuary in Spring Hill while en route to Kansas City. He was pronounced dead by Dr. C. W. Jones, who examined him in Olathe. Cherry was brought to Paola by Lloyd Brittingham of Spring Hill, and was taken to the office of Dr. Clifford Van Pelt, who took between 60 and 70 stitches in wounds on his face, ear and neck. His ear was almost completely severed. He was later removed to the Birchard Funeral home in Osawatomie, where he has been employed.

Mrs. Beets was taken to the home of A. R. Hall, a farmer who lives near the scene of the fatal accident. Yesterday afternoon, she was removed to the Beets home.

Mr. Hall was the first to reach the scene following the accident. He said Beets was lying about 25 feet from the wreckage, apparently having been thrown that distance by the impact of the crash. Beets was still alive and tried to tell him something, Hall said, but he was unable to understand the message. The injured man died shortly after the ambulance had passed through Spring Hill. His death was attributed to a fractured skull and a brain concussion.

Cherry was returning from Kansas City where he had gone earlier that day to recover his father's Mercury sedan, stolen from the family home in Osawatomie a month ago. The car had been abandoned near Stilwell after having been stripped and was taken to Kansas City for repairs. The youth was returning it to Osawatomie at the time of the accident. Rex is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Cherry, of that city. He was scheduled for induction into the army within a few days. Young Cherry was removed to St. Mary's hospital in Kansas City Wednesday night.

Beets and Miss Ethel Jackson had been quietly married at Olathe Thursday, January 22, but had not told friends of the nuptial. A card found in the wreckage disclosed that the ceremony had been performed just five days before.

Ralph Beets was born near Hillsdale, Marysville township, July 15, 1899. He spent his entire life on the same farm there and was residing at that place of his birth when the fatal tragedy occurred. His first wife, the former Hazel Denny, died eight years ago. They had five children - Alfred, 20 years old; Duke, 18; Laveda, 15; Theda, 12, and Lyle, 10. Surviving also are a brother, Fred Beets, of Hillsdale; a sister, Mrs. George Fisher, of Paola, and his father, H. P. (Doc) Beets, of this city.

Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon from the Presbyterian church in Hillsdale and burial will be in the cemetery there.
