Born in New England. Joined with the Baptist church in Springfield Massachusetts in 1846. Married in 1851. Moved westward with his wife to Alton Illinois within a year or two, and to Quincy Illinois 27 April 1855.

Businessman. Ran the Smith-hill foundry in Quincy Illinois.

Baptist.

Charter member of Vermont Street Baptist church in Quincy Illinois. Served as Deacon, Senior Deacon, and Trustee there. Also was superintendent of its Sunday school and taught the class.

Golden wedding anniversary was 8 January 1901.

On Saturday, Mr. Ceylon Smith received a present of a fine gold watch. He values it very highly on account of the giver. The inscription on the inner case is as follows: "Ceylon Smith, from Ceylon Smith Lewis; 1828 - May 5th 1888."

We congratulate Mr. Smith on the possession of a grandson so thoughtful and generous.
