KUPERMINC, Dr. Mario, passed away on February 20, 2017, at age 82. Mario was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, uncle, music lover, art collector, grill-master, talker, thinker, debater, reader, healer, physician and philanthropist. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he came to New York, N.Y. to complete his medical training. After brief stretches in New York, Buenos Aires, and Charleston, S.C., he settled with his family in Richmond, Va. in 1969, where he served on the faculty at the Medical College of Virginia and later built a thriving private practice in medical oncology. A strongly principled man, Mario believed every patient deserved the best, most humane, and dignified care regardless of ability to pay. After his retirement, he volunteered with underserved patients at the Crossover Clinic. After a long and successful career, Mario and his wife Denise retired to Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He is survived and sorely missed by Denise, his wife of 57 years; his son, Ariel and wife, Ella; his son, Gabriel and wife, Melissa; his daughter, Michelle; his son, Mark Silverman and wife, Pilar; grandchildren, David, Mia, Daniel, Erik, Andreu and Kevin; and countless adopted "kids," nieces, nephews and many, many friends. A memorial service was held in Palm Beach Gardens and burial will be held in Richmond at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor can be made to World ORT (ort.org), Hashomer Hatzair (hashomer-hatzair.net), the American Civil Liberties Union (aclu.org), or the Conquer Cancer Foundation (conquercancerfoundation.org).
