Thomas and his wife Sarah Thorne were among the original founders of the now called Codys United Baptist Church and their son-in-law and daughter were early teachers in the community. Thomas Thorne was held in sufficient respect that his considered opinion appeared to have the force of law in that he was the source of community and church judgments. He was a Deacon of the Baptist Church and referred to as the "Governor" in the community.
