BREITHAUPT, Herbert Caskey February 22, 1927 - February 16, 2017 It is with a mixture of sadness and thanksgiving for a long life well lived that we announce Herb's death on February 16, 2017, just six days shy of his 90th birthday. He died at Dorothy Ley Hospice, Etobicoke. He was born in Kitchener, the son of the Hon. Louis O. and Sara Breithaupt, and brother to Mary Cram, Sally Bastedo, and Louis Paul Breithaupt, all deceased. He shared 58 years with his loving wife, Myra, and leaves three cherished sons, Don and his wife Maureen Dessureault, Jeff and his wife Shelley McPherson, and Ross. His beloved grandchildren are Don's sons, Miles and Cameron, and Ross's daughters, May and Leigh. Mourning his death are the members of a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and their families. Herb graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and from Emmanuel College, Victoria University (University of Toronto) with a Master of Divinity degree. Through the years, he served the United Church of Canada as a parish minister with pastorates in Sault Sainte Marie and Mississauga, and as Interim Minister at Toronto's Metropolitan United Church. He also served as Chair of the National Board of Christian Education, Financial Counsellor at Emmanuel College for 37 years, Personnel Officer of the Hamilton Conference of the church, and for two seasons as host of CBC Radio's public affairs program, Concern. Herb's contribution to his community included serving as President, United Way of Peel Region and as a member of the Board of Directors, Peel Community Services and of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Herb and his family were longtime cottagers at Cognashene on Georgian Bay. In the 90-year span of his wonderful life, he never lived a summer without time spent at the Bay in the company of loved ones. An avid golfer and member at Toronto Golf Club for 39 years, a jazz lover and pianist with a one-and-a-half octave reach, he treasured life's simple pleasures, expressing a commitment to enjoying years of "slow breakfasts" during his retirement (mission accomplished). Herb always expressed deep gratitude for the love of his family and many friends. Thank you to Dr. Hamrahi and the CCAC team for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Eden United Church, Mississauga, would be appreciated. Visitation will take place Friday, March 31, 7 - 9 p.m., at Turner & Porter, Peel Chapel (2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga). A memorial service to celebrate Herb's life is planned for Saturday, April 1st, 11 a.m., at Eden United Church (3051 Battleford Road, Mississauga).
