May 17, 1947 - February 16, 2017
Dorothy Laster Pittman was born on May 17, 1947 in Jackson County, MS. The late Earnest Simmons was her biological father and the late Margaret Laster was her mother. Dorothy L. Pittman was raised by Charlie and Margaret Laster in what is now officially the City of Gautier, MS. She was the fifth of seven children born into the Laster family. Dorothy transitioned to meet our LORD on Thursday morning, February 16, 2017 in Ocean Springs, MS.
Dorothy L. Pittman was a private but kind, respectful person. She was a lifetime member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church. She recognized, accepted, and confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour at an early age.
Making history did not pass her up. Although not officially recognized, she was the FIRST African American Female to work as a School Crossing Guard with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department in Gautier, MS (during the time when Gautier was not officially a city). For more than a decade, practically seven days a week, she worked tirelessly at the Tiki Restaurant. She was considered one of the preeminent cooks that the restaurant had during that time period and is still mentioned in conversations to this very day whenever the Tiki Restaurant of that era is mentioned.
Dorothy graduated from Carver High School in 1967.
Dorothy L. Pittman left an example to follow which consisted of Love, Kindness, Respect, Patience, and Perseverance. She was preceded in transition by her biological father, her mother and stepfather, and two of her siblings, Margaret Davis and Charles Laster, respectively.
She leaves to cherish her memories her sons, Curtis Laster of Peoria, IL; David L. Pittman, Jr., and Mark A. Pittman of Gautier, MS; Eight grandchildren, Curtis J. Laster, Jr., Khalid Laster, Hope Laster, Queona Pugh, Alexander Toney, Naa'lah Pittman, Ebony Pittman, and Azariah Pittman; two great grandsons, Laith Silva and Bilal Bihi; two sisters, Mary L. Green of Gautier, MS, and Cynthia (John) Richards of Collins, MS; two brothers Lawrence (Melissa) Laster of Sacrameto, CA and Cyril (Jackie) Laster of New Orleans, LA and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
From God she came, To God she returns.
