Born in Fenton Barns, East Lothian (near Direlton) to Hugh Bertram and Isabella Mack. Her father Hugh was the manager of George Hope's farm. She emigrated to Canada, following her siblings. Her entire family, 9 siblings and her parents, came to Canada in a trickle between 1860 and 1890.

When she was 31, she married 38 year old farmer William Alexander Hall, in 1875 in Peterborough. Together, they were the parents of Isabella Charlotte, John Bertram, Hugh Johnston, Agnes Julia, William Gordon, and Alexander George. She lived with son William after she was widowed at age 74. Died of a brain hemorrage in Peterborough at age 85.
