Son of John Bertram and Ann Walker, born in the parish of Dirleton in East Lothian Scotland. Became Farm Steward at Fenton Barns in Dirleton, Haddington, Scotland, which was a model farm operated by George Hope, a famous Scottish agriculturalist. Hugh married Isabella Mack in Dirleton in May of 1835. They were the parents of 10 children, including John, Ann, Alexander, Isabella, Hugh, George, Agnes, Peter, Helen and Charlotte, born between 1837 and 1860. In 1860, his oldest son emigrated to Canada, and all of his remaining children followed in a 30 year trickle. The baby of the family, Charlotte, died as a child and was the only one left behind on Scottish soil. Two of Hugh's sons became Canadian Members of Parliament. Hugh and wife Isabella emigrated to Canada in the 1880s to join their children. Settled in Peterborough Ontario.
