According to the oral family history as related by Martha's son, James Harvey Fullerton: "She was killed during the Civil War. The story is that she was in a wagon with her children, trying to run from the Yankees that were chasing her. The wagon overturned and killed her and the twins. James Harvey Fullerton my great great grandfather was in the wagon and told several people this story. They buried her and the twins in the river bottom." This information courtesy of researchers Denise Asbury and Heather Blair. The full date of Martha's death would have been sometime after the birth of her son Volney Harold Fullerton who was born in 1860 and prior to the end of the Civil War.
