Mr. Hughes is survived by his lovely wife of 53 years and three children. He also leaves behind two grandchildren.
James Hughes was born July 26, 1942 in Bradshaw, West Virginia the son of James H. Hughes Sr. and Clemma Payne Hughes. He attended Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, Virginia.
Jim enlisted in the Air Force on October 5th 1961, served eight years in the Administration career field then was selected for an Officer Commissioning Program in 1968.
Mr. Hughes graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1969 with a BS degree in Finance and Management then went on to earn a MA degree in Public Administration from Ball State University in 1975, and an MBA degree in Management from Golden Gate University in 1981.
His decorations include Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with an oak leaf cluster, 2 Bronze Stars and the Gallantry Cross.
His time in service took him and his family all over the world; living in Europe and all across the United States. He retired from the Air Force in December 1991 as Lt Colonel.
In 1998 he made his home in Tallahassee where he worked at the Florida State Department of Finance for six years, eventually retiring in 2004.
He loved the outdoors so moving to Tallahassee afforded him the ability to play golf all year round. He would play golf at the drop of the hat and would even pack an extra set of clothes just in case there was a course on the way home.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church where he served as an Eucharistic Minister providing weekly Sunday service to those in nursing homes. He also was a member of the Gabriel Project.
In later years, he joined the Parkinson choir where he enjoyed singing with others afflicted with Parkinson where he found support and acceptance.
The family is thankful for the support and care provided by Big Bend Hospice, Home Base VA. Most of all, for the compassionate caring aids that attended to him at home.
Visitation will be held at Beggs Funeral Homes, 3322 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, FL 32311, on Sunday, February 19th from 4-7pm.
Monday he will have a full mass at Good Shepherd Cathlolic Church at 8:30 am and will be honored with a full military burial at the Tallahassee National Memorial Cemetery at 10am.
