Jean Haugland, 89, of Pleasant Hill IA, died February 12, 2017.
Her life's journey started on a farm near Albert City, IA on October 28, 1927. She was one of three children raised by Louisa and Oscar Nelson. They spent many years on the farm near Albert City, IA. She had fond memories of her loving parents, especially while celebrating birthdays with their special china and having grape flavored tapioca. During her teenage years, they moved to a farm near Buffalo Center, IA. They moved on a March day so her father could begin planting right away. She developed lifelong friends, and enjoyed returning for class reunions.
Growing up she helped with chores that included bringing in cobs for the stove and gathering eggs. On days off from school, she did laundry. During her high school years, she worked in the library. After high school, she attended one year of college at Iowa Statetaking home economics, per her mother's wishes.
She met her husband, Dr. Stanley Haugland, on a blind date. A friend of her mother's had invited her over and had also" taken the liberty" to invite a young gentleman over. She didn't have a ride home, therefore, this young gentleman provided transportation for her. This gentleman, Stanley, then went off to the Korean War for two years. They exchanged letters through this time. He also wrote to her parents and to her sister to gain favor. A short time, after his return from the war, they wedon her parent's farm on December 27, 1952.
They started their journey together moving to Iowa City, IA where her husband started school at the University of Iowa in January of 1953. Memories from Iowa City, included going over to Lake Macbride with friends to swim, picnics on farms nearby eating peanut butter sandwiches and drinking powdered milk diluted with water, protesting rent increase of their loving home made of corrugated metal, and the beginning of raising their family (Mark and Louisa) together. They, also, gave birth to Signe Ellen during this time, however, sadly, she died at age 7 months. Iowa City, again, allowed for new lifelong friendships to develop.
From Iowa City, they moved to Cedar Rapids, IA for her husband to complete his internship. Their son, Frank, was born in Cedar Rapids. From Cedar Rapids, they moved to Lake Mills, IA.
She impacted her children's' lives in so many ways.She was instrumental in teaching them how to read. On the first day of each school year, she baked each a cake in the shape of an open book. In the book she would draw an example of something they would be learning that year. She taught them independence through helping them learn to ride bikes. She promoted exercise through being sure they attended swimming lessons and taught them how to do cartwheels. She was also a Cub and Girl Scout leader. She exposed her children to fine arts through the ballet and opera. She was a Charter Member of the Winnebago Handicapped Services.
Once her youngest child became a teenager she, at age 40, obtained a Bachelor of Political Science degree.
During, her life in Lake Mills, her political service began. She became the first city councilwoman and ran for theIowa House seat in the 8th Legislative District losing that bid.
After several years in Lake Mills, her husband accepted an opportunity of a new career path, and they moved to Des Moines IA. She continued to be politically active. She was elected to the Democratic State Central Committee in 1974, becoming Vice-Chair in 1976. She was Co-Chair of President Jimmy Carter's campaign in 1976 and again in 1980. In 1980, she was elected to the Democratic National Committee serving until 1992. In 1984, she was Co-Chair of Senator Tom Harkin's campaign for United States Senate and Co-Chair of Walter Mondale's campaign for President, and was a personal friend of Vice-Presidential candidate, Geraldine Ferraro of New York. She was Co-Chair of Congressman Dick Gephardt's campaign for President in 1988 and for Senator Bill Bradley's campaign for President in 2000. She was a key supporter and advisor in the 1998 and 2006 gubernatorial campaigns of Governor Tom Vilsack. Throughout her many years of service to the Iowa Democratic Party, she traveled the state on behalf of countless candidates and was a tireless supporter of all from the Courthouse to the White House. She was a champion of labor and women's rights.
She enjoyed the arrival of grandchildren. The older ones fondly remember the weeks of vacation spent there being spoiled by being taken swimming, going to the park, and going to Toys R Us. One year, due bad weather, they promptly all went to the lower level but left grandpa in bed. Something, we have laughed about for years. The next set of grandchildren came later and some of their favorite earliest memories are going to grandma's house for breakfast, swimming, and watching the Fourth of July parade and fireworks.
Jean is survived by her children Mark, Louisa (Dan), and Frank (Krista); her grandchildren Matt (Eryn), Katie(Eric), Karla, Stanley, Hayden, Ben, and Jakob (Ashley); her sister in law, Maxine; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by their daughter, Signe; her parents; her brother Jim and her sister Carolyn.
Her family wants to share deep gratitude to The Shores at Pleasant Hill and Hospice of the Midwest.
