Son of Charles Stewart b. ca. 1725-1730 Spotyslvania County, VA, d. November 15, 1807 Wake County, NC) and his wife Hannah Kirk (b. ca. 1730-1735 VA, d. January 1, 1823 Wake County, NC) of Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC and Wake County, NC. Husband of Mary Cutts (b. June 1, 1783 Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC, d. bet. 1860-1866 Wake County, NC).

Probable grandson of Charles Steward (b. ca. 1690-1700 King George County, VA, d. before June 5, 1750 Spotsylvania County, VA) and his wife Mary Proctor (b. ca. 1700 VA, d. aft. March 11, 1773 Spotsylvania County, VA) of Spotsylvania County, VA.

James and his descendants frequently used the Stuart surname spelling.

James Stuart's birth date is derived from a family bible record copied by LDS researcher Frances Baker in the early 20th century. The current whereabouts of that original record is unknown.

The location of the original residence of James Stuart can be found in Middle Creek District near the Harnett County, NC line on the Fendol Bevers map of Wake County, NC (1871) .

There is no grave marker for James Stuart and his wife Mary Cutts. They are said to be buried in a field at Kennebec, Wake County, NC on the grounds of the Fuquay-Angier airfield. The alleged location of their graves was once marked by tree, which is now gone.
