Gary Oberst, was born in Elk City, August 19, 1953 and passed away March 13, 2004, following a heart attack at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. He is survived by his parents, Virgil and Georganna Oberst, of OKC, OK; sister, Patricia Vallee of Kalamazoo, MI; nephew, Todd Vallee and his two children, Taylor and Alexandria; and niece Kristina New and her son Chandler and Godparents, Mel and Alice Oberst of Albuquerque, NM.

Gary attended St. James Catholic grade school and Mount St. Mary's High School in Oklahoma City. He was an honor student and valedictorian of his class. He graduated OSU in 1975 with a B.A. degree in English and Journalism. While at OSU, he directed their first dinner theatre, "Night Watch".

After graduation he moved to CA, to engage in his great love, the entertainment industry. He worked ten years for Warner Bros. music department when the "videos" began. He was in charge of the royalties dept.

He left Warner Bros. to begin his career as a casting director, where he worked twenty years in television and movies. He did the casting for the TV series "Hotel", "Loveboat", "Santa Barbara", "Civil Wars", and other movies for TV. In 1995, he received the CSA Award for casting the "In Search of Doctor Seuss" a TNT special. This award is equivalent to the Oscar award for acting. Shortly thereafter, he was told that he had liver cancer and his doctor recommended that he abandon his stressful work as a casting director.

In 1998, with a friend, he staffed a small greeting card company, "Cards on the Table". His friend, Steve, designed the cards and Gary wrote the copy. Recently, he served as a volunteer for the Hollywood Entertainment Museum, where he was valued for his encyclopedic memory regarding the entertainment business.

Gary was 38 years old when members of his birth family, who had been looking for him some time, contacted him. His two birth sisters, Lisa Bartholemy and husband Dan, and Lauren Copenhauer and husband Robert and brothers Lewis, Lance and Layne Bukovskis and many nephews and nieces became an important part of his life in CA. Gary will be remembered as bright, funny, loyal and a loving son, brother and friend. God bless the memory of Gary Michael Oberst and may he rest in peace.
