John J. Meyer, 81, RR 2 (Haldane), Forreston, died Tuesday, May 17, 1983, in Freeport Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Born Oct. 2, 1901, in Pecatonica, son of Joseph H. and Kate Boom Meyer. Married to the former Gladys A. Morrison in Belvidere, April 14, 1926. He was a retired carpenter; had also owned and operated the Haldane Grocery Store and was formerly Haldane postmaster from 1934 to 1945. Member of West Branch Church of the Brethren, rural Polo, and lifetime member of National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife, Gladys; two daughters, Miss Ruth Meyer, Haldane, and Mrs. Ben (Jean) Walker, Mount Morris; two sons, Joe Meyer, Haldane, and Russell Meyer, Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mullican and Miss Katie Meyer. Predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.

Services 10 a.m. Friday, Mary 20, in Finch Funeral Home, Mount Morris, with the Rev. Glenn N. Rohrer, pastor of West Branch Church of the Brethren, officiating. Burial in Twelve Mile Grove Cemetery, Pecatonica. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Village of Progress, Oregon.
