Scott Bates Gaul, 24, beloved son of Beth and Stephen of Slater, Iowa died of a drug overdose, February 8, 2017.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Slater United Methodist Church in Slater, Iowa. A luncheon will follow the services preceding the interment at Union Cemetery, in Union, Iowa.

Scott was born in Seoul, South Korea on September 25, 1992 and was welcomed with so much love and joy by Beth and Stephen, ironically, February 8, 1993. As a baby, Scott was the delight of his parents and grandparents. He loved going to the park, doing puzzles, and being a good big brother to his sister Rachel (just ask her). He was inquisitive, intelligent, funny, clever, active, and affectionate. He so loved and looked forward to family vacations on Lake Okoboji. He achieved the rank of Star Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Once in school, Scott thrived both academically and athletically. He chose soccer, baseball, cross country, tennis and excelled in all. He took pleasure in running, watching movies, playing pool, speech, theater, choir, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed his friends and maintained long relationships with them.

Throughout his short life, music was a passion of Scott's. He mastered piano, guitar, and clarinet. He played in honor bands, garage bands, small bands, community bands, college bands and was the recipient of many music awards. He was twice an All State Band honoree. People said that he had “ear ability” and could play after hearing a melody one time. Not only did he enjoy listening and playing, he also composed music. Scott was able to be outside of himself as he wrote music at the keyboards.

His great intelligence enabled him to excel academically and attend the colleges of his choice. His recent plans included pharmacy school at Long Island University.
