She was the widow of Amos "Droupy" Stephens.
She is survived by her sisters, Martha S. Tipper of Hoover, AL and Alma S. Bettis of Mims, FL; niece, Shirley Tipper Crumpton (Ken) and great nieces, Karen Howell (Todd) of Hoover, AL, Paula Brooks (Rex) of Hoover, AL and Jenni Ross (Dave) of New York City, NY, along with their children. Others that will cherish her memory include other beloved nieces, nephews and relatives, as well as the church itself.
Born in Valley (Shawmut), Alabama, Edith was the third of eight children of parents, Fannie Maude Shurette Smith (1896-1988) and Andrew Lee Smith (1894-1968).
She was one of the six beautiful "Smith sisters;" Mary (dec.), Martha, Irma (dec.), Alma and Ginny (dec.), along with brothers, Jack (dec.) and Marlin (dec.).
She was a wonderful homemaker and was a member of Powderly Baptist Church in the western section of Birmingham. There she enjoyed her ministry of rocking babies in the church nursery for 30 years so young parents could attend worship services.
Since Aunt "E" had outlived several pastors as well as the church itself, the family will preside over a private graveside service on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 3pm at Elmwood Cemetery.
We will miss her wit and humor, and faithful birthday cards that she never forgot!
