Betty J. (Hennen) Holmes, was born in Panora, Iowa on February 4, 1929, the daughter of George and Evangeline (Shell) Hennen. She was baptized at the Christian Church in Panora. Betty graduated from Panora High School in 1946. Betty married Roscoe Babberl on December 19, 1948 at the Christian Church in Panora. She attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
Betty taught eight years at Assumption School in Granger, retiring in 1981 to take care of her ailing husband until his death in 1991. She served on many boards; Madrid School Board, Madrid City Council and Executive Board of Central Iowa Regional Housing Authority. She joined Lions International and was elected District Governor in 1998. Betty married Harold Holmes on November 24, 2000 at the First Baptist Church of Boone. The two spent many hours volunteering for Hospice of Central Iowa. They also spent a lot of time helping out their church. In 2006 they began hosting a southern gospel sing at Herman Park, which occurs each annually on the last Saturday in June.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roscoe, son, Tom; daughter, Paula; sister Nina; brothers, Melvin, Dean and George. She is survived by her husband, Harold; two daughters, Betty Ann of Boone and Laura of Boone; step-children, Duane Holmes, Karen Ricklefs, Craig Holmes and Joyce Burival; daughter-in-law, Brenda Lumley and son-in-law, Dan Brown; four grandchildren, twelve step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren.
