John Roger Ellis, 94, Aitkin, formerly of Palisade, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017, at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin.
John was born Feb. 13, 1922, at Waukenabo Township of Aitkin County, Minn., the son of James and Emmalissa (James) Ellis. He grew up and attended schools in Waukenabo Township. He then worked for a time in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II. Upon his discharge, he went to the Dakotas where he worked for a time and then went to work for the Quaker Oats Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He married Donna Loraine Schoonmaker on June 7, 1952 in Aitkin. They lived in Cedar Rapids for three years and then moved to the Palisade area where they have lived most of their married life.
John worked for the McGarry Construction Company for a time and then went to work in the mines at Crosby for 15 years. He then went to work for the Co-op station in Palisade as a mechanic and worked there for 15 years before he retired. He then worked in the rice paddies after he had retired. He moved to the Aicota Health Care Center the day after Thanksgiving of 2016. He enjoyed hunting, reading, walking and mowing the lawn.
He is survived by his wife Donna Ellis, Aitkin; children: Wesley and Deb Ellis, Nisswa; William and Lynn Ellis, Zimmerman; James Ellis, Palisade; Raymond and Irene Ellis, Nisswa; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 13, 2017 at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin with Rev. Barry Hite and Rev. Charles Carlson officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Waukenabo Cemetery.
