Robert W. Whitener, MD, 87, died January 31, 2015. He spent his early childhood in Hunan province China, where his parents were missionaries of the Reformed Church. He attended the Kuling American School and the Shanghai American School. His family returned to the U.S. in 1940. He graduated from the Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA in 1945.After one year of college he was drafted and spent one year in Japan in the Army Air Corps. He returned to Catawba College and graduated magna cum laude in 1950. He enrolled in Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, IL, graduating in 1954. While there he married Marion Talley Lefler in 1952, who put him through medical school. After an internship at Charity Hospital, New Orleans and psychiatric residency at NC Memorial Hospital Chapel Hill, NC, he worked in the Student Health Service of the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL. In 1961 he began private practice of adult psychiatry in Greensboro. During his years of private practice until his retirement in 1998, he held several part-time consulting positions and was a member of various psychiatric associations. He active in numerous mental health projects in Greensboro. Robert was a faithful member of the Peace United Church of Christ choir. He took his turn teaching his Sunday School class and served on the church consistory. He was survived by two children: Donald and Louise Hearn.
