Back Creek was organized September 1805 after splitting off from Thyatira Presbyterian Church. It was said that for quite a while this group worshipped in a barn about a mile from the present site of Back Creek Church. They petitioned the Presbytery to be organized into a church and it was granted September 1805. The first church building built in 1805 was a little log church. Mr. John Barr deeded the church the land. The second church building was built in 1811. It was replaced in 1857 with the present day brick church building. The name of the church is derived from a nearby stream. The early Rowan County records indicate that this creek was referred to as being back of Sill‚s Creek, hence the name "Back Creek." Forefathers held that the church and the schoolhouse should go together and so nearby a Session House was built in 1882 to serve also as a schoolhouse or academy. The old school bell stands at the Education Building Annex door. In April of 1951, the church began work on a religious educational building and it was completed March 30, 1952.
