George L. Gaston, a son of John and Hannah Bovee Gaston, was born in the bounds of Fairfield in Wayne County, Illinois on the 14th of July 1841. His grandfather, James Gaston, was an early settler of the area and a Revolutionary War veteran with the South Carolina Militia.

On March 28th 1864, young George enlisted as a Private in Co. K, 10th Indiana Cavalry serving until the end in April 1865; ranking out as a Corporal.¹

Per Illinois Civil War veterans records², George L. Gaston was buried in Bovee Cemetery near his parents in the 25th year of his age.
