Cary (Carey) Toney and his twin brother Poindexter Toney.(1763-1832) were born on October 19, 1763, in Buckingham County, Virginia Colony, to William Moss Toney (1737–1804) and Margaret Sutherland Toney (1731–1812). Respectively Cary and Poindexter were the sixth and seventh born of fourteen siblings of whom nine have Find a Grave Memorials linked below to those of their parents, to those of the twins Cary & Poindexter, and to those of each other.
During the War of the American Revolution (1775-1783) May 1781, Cary Toney enlisted in the Virginia Militia and served in that unit until the fall of 1782. On September 1, 1789, in Franklin County, Virginia, Cary Toney wed Elizabeth ("Betsey") Doran (Toney, 1767–1865) and with her raised ten children, all of whom were born in the state of Virginia. The Find a Grave Memorials of nine of these ten children are linked below to each other and to those of their parents. After briefly moving to and settling in western Virginia -- since 1863 the state of West Virginia -- at the turn of the 17th to the 18th century, the large family of Cary Toney and Elizabeth (Doran) Toney arrived in Dixon Township of Preble County , Ohio, during the year 1818 among the earliest of Dixon Township's pioneer American settlers.
Cary Toney died on September 6, 1859, at Eaton, seat of Preble County, Ohio, and was interred in nearby Railsback Cemetery at Goodwins Corner in Union County, Indiana.

Bruce Garver, the manager of Cary Toney's Memorial, follows standard Find a Grave practice by spelling Cary Toney's first name as it is incised upon his gravestone and not as "Carey Toney" as it appears in several documents the published obituary reprinted immediately below. To avoid confusion, Cary (Carey) Toney is usually mentioned with the second spelling of "Carey" in parentheses. But in attached documents where Carey appears as the first name, (Cary) follows in parenthesis.
