Abe Yates, 89, Comanch Pioneer Businessman, Buried Sunday
Funeral for Abe Yates, the last of the pioneer settlers and businessmen of Comanche was conducted at 3:30pm Sunday, July 25th in the Comanche Church of Christ with J. U. Briste officiating, assisted by Mark Hanna.
He died July 22 in Jefferson County Memorial Hospital after a two week illness.
Mr. Yates was the last member of the Yates family that was instrumental in organizing and settling Comanche when it was still Indian Territory.
He was four years of age when he came from Russellville, Arkansas with his father, John Pryor Yates, his mother and family. They traveled from Russellville in an ox drawn wagon train making about 6 miles a day.
"Old" Tucker I.T. was their first home in 1893, later they moved to the area that became Comanche. The community, the church and the school all grew as the Yates family grew.
On February 19, 1905, Abe Yates married Lovice Leach, a niece of J.B. Leach. Her death occured May 15, 1957.
He was a very active member of the Comanche Church of Christ, serving as a deacon. A licensed undertaker at the age of 19?, he and his father went into business as J.P. Yates and Son Furniture and Undertaking. He retired in 1957.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Mathes, Lawon; Mrs Delores Krapp, Port Washington, New York; Mrs. Rita Lilly, Duncan and Mrs. Norma Peck, Wichita Falls, Texas.
Also surviving are 5 sisters, Mrs. Mary Dodd, Marlow; Mrs. Sally Duncan, Durant; Mrs. Louise Speer, Comanche; Mrs. Zaylon Sowell, Comanche and Mrs. Romas Ayres, Midland, Texas and 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
Pallbearers wer Jr. Turner, Herby Perceivid?, G.C. Ple__e, Phil? Kennedy, W.T. Maloen and John Burnham.
Interment was in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Morehead Funeral Home.
