In 1942, Gene enlisted in the United States Navy serving in the Seabees during World War II in Guadalcanal and Okinawa.

Following his honorable discharge in 1945 he married his high school sweetheart, Arlene Eide on January 1, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Iowa.

At that time they moved to their farm outside Story City, where they worked together in their turkey and farming operation. Gene resided there until the fall of 2013 when he became a beloved resident of the Zearing Health Care Center.
