She was born April 2, 1922, the daughter of Edward and Agnes Hermes of Harmon. Helen graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, with degrees in music and business. She was particularly fond of her time spent as an educator in the Manlius area, a regional manager for World Book Enterprises, and more than 60 years as a choir director for St. Mary Church in Sterling.
On Sept. 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to John P. Conway at St Mary Church in Sterling.
She is survived by her 10 children, Agnes Conway, J. Paul (Susie) Conway, Edward (Kathy) Conway, Mary (Larry) Levine, Raymond (Deb) Conway, Anne Hungerford, Joseph (Ann) Conway, Hugh (Regina) Conway, Maggie (Jim) Wike, and Fran (Charles) Mascari; 28 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and the nieces and nephews of the Conway, Hermes, and Brennan families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings.
The rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. Sunday, followed by a celebration of Helen’s life from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Ave., Rock Falls. Celebration of the Mass Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Tampico, with the Rev. Richard Russo officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Tampico.
Helen’s wishes were that memorials be directed to either the Sterling Municipal Band Concert or St. Mary Catholic Church of Tampico.
