Mr. Bill Gene Powell, retired Coach and beloved Educator, age 84, of Rockmart, Ga., passed away on Thursday evening, January 26, 2017 following a brief illness. Mr. Powell was born on September 17, 1932 in DeKalb County, Alabama, son of the late Arthur O. Powell and Ethel Stone Powell. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother, H.R. Powell and his sister, Mary D. Powell Holley.
Bill attended and graduated from Rockmart High School in 1951. He was a proud member of the 1950 State Champion Football Team & played with the 1951 Peanut Bowl National Champions winning over Holy Oaks School with a score of 19 to 14. He received a scholarship to the University of Kentucky to play football but was drafted into the United States Air Force in 1952 and served in the Far East Theater of Operations. Bill was stationed in Japan for 2 years. He served from 1952 until 1956 and attained the rank of Staff Sargent.
Following his return home, he worked for the Lockheed-Martin-Marietta Corporation in the Jet Engine Division. In 1957 he began attending Jacksonville State University and graduated in 1961, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a minor in History. He went on to work hard and attained his Master's Degree in Education in 1962. He joined the Textile Paper Products Co. in 1963 and served as the Assistant Plant Superintendent.
Desiring to fulfill his dream and aspirations to teach, he returned to the field of Education and received his Education Specialists Degree. He began his journey in teaching in the Cherokee Alabama School System from 1966 until 1970, transferring here, to the Polk School District & faithfully served as an Educator, Coach and a Mentor to hundreds of children. Coach Powell retired following thirty three plus years of dedicated service.
Bill had been a member of the Rockmart Community Chorus for over 25 years and was a longtime & active member of the Southside Baptist Church, a member of the Donald Gore Men's Sunday School Class and enjoyed being a member of the Southside Baptist Church Choir.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife, Mrs. Jean C. Powell; his sons, Tom Powell and Scott Powell; his sister, Patsy P. Payton; his grandchildren, Dr. Clark Powell & Dr. Jamie Powell and Tanner Powell; his great grandchild, Jude Powell; a number of nieces & nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Bill G. Powell will be conducted on Sunday afternoon, January 29, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with the Rev. Joel A. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Polk Memory Gardens.
The following Gentlemen are asked to serve as Pallbearers: Dr. Clark Powell, Tanner Powell, Mike Statham, Bray Hulsey, Judd Mobbs, Henry Brown and Willie Truett.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Donald Gore Men's Sunday School Class.
