After serving in the Navy, John married Phyllis Harding Karpe of Liberal, Kansas, on March 9, 1956 in Clayton, New Mexico and they enjoyed life together for 55 years. Phyllis preceded him in death in 2011. Also preceding John in death were his parents, his sister, Jessie McDermott and three brothers: Frank Bromwell, Denn Bromwell and Mannley Bromwell.
John enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening. In addition to working on his parents’ farm and ranch, he worked in the oil field his entire career. He enlisted in the Navy and served over three years, being honorably discharged. John was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign War and was a 32 degree Mason.
John is survived by his four children: Diana Long, Liberal, Kansas, Sharon Maerz (Brad), Denver, Colorado, Debbie Norwood (Mike), Colorado Springs, Colorado and Johnna Caldwell (Joe), Turpin, Oklahoma. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Teresa Long, Kansas City, Missouri, Jason Long (Chris), Liberal, Kansas, Jonathan Maerz (Shelby), Denver, Colorado, Nick Maerz, Denver, Colorado, Amy Maerz, Oregon, Sarah Sweatt (Michael), Colorado Springs, Colorado, Benjamin Norwood (Lindsey), Colorado Springs, Colorado and Mindy James (Kelly), Stillwater, Oklahoma. In addition, John is survived by 19 great-grandchildren.
John is also survived by one brother, Don Bromwell (Frankie), Stephenville, TX. A special thank you is given to the Morton County Care Center staff, who were very supportive during John’s long illness.
A service celebrating John’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the Plains United Methodist Church in Plains, Kansas. Inurnment will follow at the Plains Cemetery immediately after the service. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Plains United Methodist Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
