On 27 Mar 1941, Jose G. Maestas (B: 1916), resident of Rio Arriba County, New Mexico; enlisted as a Private in the US Army in Santa Fe. He was described as single, 5 feet 5 inches, 126 pounds, and a farm hand. In 1941, Jose served with the Coast Artillery Corps in the Philippines. On 8 Dec 1941, Imperial Japanese began their invasion of the Philippines. American and Filipino forces on the Bataan Peninsula were compelled to surrender on 9 April 1942. Jose survived the Bataan Death March that followed. On 7 May 1942, he was reported as a POW in the Philippines. In 1945, he was liberated from Osaka Main Camp Chikko, Japan where he was used as slave labor. He was discharged on 9 Jun 1946.
