James Eugene Handy was born June 25, 1941 to James Albert and Evelyn Ella (Simpson) Handy in Spencer, Iowa. He was baptized in the United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Jim began his education in country school near Royal and Sutherland. His family moved to Ruthven, where Jim completed his education, graduating from Ruthven High School.

On November 16, 1963 Jim was united in marriage to Kay Seid. She and Jim were involved in an automobile accident on April 19, 1965 and Kay died as a result of this accident.
He was later married to Ramona Ray Jackson on February 14, 1969.
Jim was employed at M & JR Hakes in Spencer for several years He owned and operated a bar at Kenerim for awhile and then worked for Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

After returning to Ruthven, Jim began working for the City. He was employed with them just a few months short of twenty years. Jim also helped his parents care for the cemetery.

While in Ruthven, Jim met Darlene Miner, who became his life partner and fiancée. They enjoyed their time together dancing and getting together with friends. Jim also liked gardening and being outdoors. He like to "putter" around and go fishing. He had a heart of gold and was willing to help anyone in need. He truly enjoyed life to its fullest.

Jim passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Osage Rehab Center in Osage, Iowa, at the age of 75.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Kay; and two nephews, Bradley Bruns and Rodney Koenig.

He is survived by his fiancée, Darlene Miner of Ruthven, Iowa; Darlene's children, Richard (Debbie) Feldman of Ruthven, Iowa, Dennis Feldman of Ruthven, Iowa, Robin (Don) Hoskinson of Portland, Oregon and Stacy (Lynn) Miner of Grimes, Iowa; five grandchildren; sisters, Annabelle (Bob) Busse of Laurens, Iowa, Alta (Gordon) Bruns of Spencer, Iowa, Melva (Dennis) Koenig of Ruthton, Minnesota and Mary (Orlin) Lundbeck of Royal, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
