Mr. Shipley was born in Bradley County, Arkansas to Iva Hazel Green Shipley and Jess Calvin Shipley. He grew up in Hermitage, Arkansas, later attending college at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and Monticello. He returned to Hermitage to become the principal of his former high school. He continued his passion and calling for education as an instructor at the American Military Academy in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He later became employed by Phillips Petroleum Company for 40 years retiring in 1984.
Les enjoyed traveling, wood working and the pursuit of knowledge through extensive reading and discussion. He particularly favored conversation and a cup of hot coffee with double cream.
He was preceded in death by his wives Reba (Elliot) Shipley and Nita (Ross) Shipley.
Survivors include his brother, Ray Calvin Shipley of Baton Rouge, Lousiana; daughters with Reba, Leslie Anderson of Bentonville, Arkansas and Becky Hankins of Bentonville, Arkansas; Through marriage with Nita, daughters, Carol Wofford of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kathy Kerr of Edmond, Oklahoma, Teresa Roberson of Canyon Lake, California and Marolyn Fisher of Bend, Oregon; a niece and nephew and many loving grand and great grandchildren.
Graveside services: Friday, January 27, 2017 at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home, with Randall Caselman, Minister of the Bella Vista, Arkansas Church of Christ officiating.
