Peggy Louise Mathias Smith, 84, of Beecher City, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at her home. Peggy was born November 6, 1932 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the daughter of Earl and Meredythe (Hall) Stevens. On August 18, 1950, she and A.B. Mathias Jr. were united in marriage, after his death in 1992 she remarried to Robert Smith October 21, 2000 and he preceded her in death in 2005.

In 1978 Peggy began working as a LPN for various nursing homes until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of Holland Church, Eastern Star in Beecher City and Beecher City Kitchen Band. She enjoyed the outdoors gardening and traveling.

Surviving are her children Dorinda (Don) Himes of Beecher City, Illinois; Gary (Elaine) Mathias of Mattoon, Illinois; Marlene (Sid) Hutchison of Beecher City, Illinois; daughter-in-law Connie Mathias of Altamont, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; siblings Dorothy (Jack) LeDuc of Utah; Richard (Barb) Stevens of Colorado; Alice Wicks of Oregon; Robert (Judy) Stevens of Washington; Edith (Carl) Runkel of Vandalia, Illinois; sister-in-law Charlene Stevens of Ohio.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands A.B. Mathias Jr., Robert Smith, a son Glen, one sister Carole and brother Harold.

Memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will take place at Hubbartt Cemetery, Beecher City.
