Richard L. Armfield Dies, Was Editor At Ironton

Richard Lewis Armfield, owner, publisher and editor of the Mountain Echo in Ironton, Mo., died yesterday of a heart attack. He was 52 years old.

Before moving to Ironton in 1963, Mr. Armfield was news editor of the Waterways Journal, a river shipping trade journal published in St. Louis.

Mr. Armfield helped organize the Ironton Chamber of Commerce, was past president of the Rotary Club, belonged to the Lions Club, the Elks Club and the Meramec Basin Association.

Mr. Armfield was a graduate of Granite City High School and the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Before moving to the Waterways Journal he had been a reporter for the Associated Press.

Surviving are his wife Isla, business manager of the Mountain Echo; his father, Clarence, and a sister, Ellen Armfield, both of Granite City.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church, Ironton. Burial will be at the Sunset Hills Cemetery, Edwardsville, Ill. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Ironton Boy Scout Troop 403, in care of Glen Persinger, Ironton.
