Josaphat Plater-Zyberk, 88, of Chester Springs, an architect who designed many of the branch offices of the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society (now Mellon Bank), died Saturday at Paoli Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Plater-Zyberk was born in Konigsberg, East Prussia, and earned a diploma as an engineer-architect at Warsaw Polytechnic Institute. He practiced architecture with his brother in Warsaw, then joined the Polish underground army, serving from 1940 until 1945.

He immigrated to the United States in 1947.

As a resident architect for PSFS from the 1950s through the early 1970s, he designed many of the bank's branch offices in the city and suburbs.

He also designed the restoration of several Colonial-era houses in the Philadelphia area.

His hobbies were history and painting. After his retirement, he painted a series of works depicting Polish cavalry regiments, mounted and in dress uniform.

He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, was active in the Boy Scouts, sat on the Tredyffrin Township Planning Commission, and was a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Basil's Roman Catholic Church, Kimberton.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Meysztowicz Plater-Zyberk; son, Josaphat Jr.; daughters, Maya Miller-Aichholz, Rosemary Clark and Elizabeth Plater- Zyberk Duany; nine grandchildren; and two sisters.

Burial in Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, Doylestown.
