Mary Agnes Tannian was born in 1865 (some sources say 1867) in County Galway Ireland to Jeremiah Tannian and Catherine Fallon. Mary immigrated to the United States in 1882 and became a US Citizen nine years later in 1891. She married Michael Patrick Hynes on June 1, 1892 and they eventually bought a home at 105 Riverside Drive, Watertown, MA.

After Mary's husband passed away she told one of her grandchildren:
Somewhat after 'Papa' died, 'Nana' said "It was a good that Papa left me something or I might have to do laundry for other people." She wasn't joking. Our ancestors came over here knowing they must work for everything they could achieve.

Mary and Michael had five children:
Frank J (born Dec 31, 1894) who married Gertrude McBride in Cambridge, MA on June 27, 1923.
Agnes (born April 20, 1893) who married John S. Coughlan on April 21, 1920.
Walter Thomas (born Sept 23, 1897) who married Genevieve Costello on June 29, 1921.
Cecelia (born November 13, 1899) who married Jim Malloy.
John Leo (born May 10, 1904) who married Teresa (Trixie) Devereaux.
