LaFond was born June 28, 1919 and passed away June 3, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents Ben Pruitt Hellums and Beatrice Archer Hellums and her husband of 62 years Bill Ghormley. LaFond and Bill moved to Deer Park in 1946. She was an original member of the Deer Park Church of Christ, and remained an active faithful member until her health failed. She enjoyed church camp as much or more than the kids and looked forward to working and cooking for them. She was a wonderful cook, known for her homemade bread and cornbread dressing. LaFond was instrumental in starting the first Kindergarten class in Deer Park in 1947, along with Sue Wheeler, Stuzie Van Trease, Gladys Simmons and Mary Dorris. LaFond was a gifted artist and longtime member and past president of the Deer Park Art League. She retired from the Deep Park Independent School District after 25 years as cafeteria manager at Parkwood Elementary. LaFond was a member of Deer Park Heritage Society and the Food Service Association. She had a “real” green thumb and revived many dying plants. Her tomatoes were the best. LaFond is preceded in death by 1 brother, 4 sisters and grand daughter Sara Haselbarth Sullivan. LaFond is survived by 2 sons – William Michael Ghormley III and wife Cherie of La Porte, Craig Ghormley of Deep Park, 3 daughters – Dr. Cindy Hargis of Deer Park, Sheryl Haselbarth of Deer Park, Elaine Matejka and Husband Jack of Deer Park. 11 grandchildren – Scott Matejka, Steve Matejka, Angie Haselbarth Gorman, Brent Haselbarth, Amy Ghormley, April Ghormley Cantu, Jason Ghormley, Julie Ghormley, Josh Ghormley, Garrett Ghormley, Raegan Hargis and 13 Great grand children. 2 sisters – Pauline Parsons of Baird Texas, Olena Ezell of Rising Star Texas, numerous nieces and nephews. A Special friend Margie Harrell of Deer Park. LaFond Ghormley was a gifted and talented Christian Lady, a strong woman, a cancer survivor, salutatorian of her class of 1937, a quick wit with a sense of humor, a Brownie Scout leader, a seamstress, a loving, caring Mom and Mamaw. She is already missed. Funeral Services were held 10:00 AM Monday with Gerald Elliott officiating. Interment Grandview Cemetery.
