Elma Gayman, 102 of Ellendale, North Dakota died January 9, 2017 at her home. She was born May 25, 1914 to Linus Freeman and Lena Katleynia (Wagner) Knox on a farm near Fullerton. Elma grew up in Fullerton, Monango and Tioga, ND area as the family moved where farming and work could be found during hard times.

Elma graduated from Monango High School and attended Ellendale Normal Institute and earned her teaching degree from Valley City State Teachers College. She taught in Oakes, Streeter and several rural township schools. Her favorite township school was north of Valley City.

On October 25, 1947 Elma married John C. Gayman on the Fred and Lillian Keller farm near Monango, ND. They made their home on the Gayman farm on the State Line until 1982. Elma is survived by her children: Coleen, Cheryl, Sidney and Linda; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings: William, Rosella, Lillian, Lynn, Viola, Harold, Clyde, infant baby boy and Delores.

A private funeral was held with Ian O’Brien officiating with music provided by Chad Hammontree. Burial will be in the Ellendale Cemetery. There will be a public memorial honoring Elma later this coming summer. Please come and join the family and celebrate this wonderful wife, mother, grandmother’s life.
