Carrie Dail Barnes peacefully left this life Friday, June 17, surrounded by family.
Born Carrie Driver Dail on Nov. 8, 1916, in Lenoir County, to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Dail, she was a 1933 graduate of Smithfield High School.
On Jan. 15, 1934, she became Mrs. Charlie David Barnes and together they had two sons and two daughters: Glenn Wesley Barnes, Charles Daniel Barnes (wife Sandra), Barbara Dail Barnes Yelverton Sharpe and Betty Carolyn Barnes Allen (husband Wayne). Charlie and Glenn preceded Carrie in death.
She is survived by grandchildren Paul Yelverton of Jacksonville, Fla, Scott Barnes of Apex and Pam Yelverton, Angela Barnes Capps and Laura Allen Pittman, all of Raleigh.
Carrie was a devoted and active member of Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church, serving in the Women's Auxiliary and as a Sunday School teacher. She worked with the cafeteria at Four Oaks School for many years, serving as manager for most of that time. Mrs. Barnes was a mother-away-from-home to many students. In addition to attending church functions, Carrie enjoyed cooking, baking and reading. Her sourdough bread and pound cakes were loved by family and friends for many, many years. Carrie showed selfless caring for those around her and her full life carries on through the lives she has touched.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at Minshew Funeral Home in Four Oaks.
Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church in Smithfield. Burial at Four Oaks Cemetery will follow the service.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church, 5835 Black Creek Rd., Smithfield, NC 27577.
