Note: No death or burial record has been found for Jonathan. His death date is a rough approximation based on his age, and his still being alive in 1758. He and his wife are likely buried in one of the ancient cemeteries in Plaistow.

Jonathan was the son of Abraham Merrill and Abigail Webster of Newbury, Mass. He m. c. 1701 (recorded in Haverhill with date lost) Mary BROWN, b. c. 1681, d. Plaistow, NH 13 May 1758. She was NOT the daughter of Nicholas Brown and Mary Linfurth as demonstrated by Mary Holman Lovering in her 1938 Pillsbury genealogy. In her death record, Mary was explicitly called the wife of Jonathan Merrill, and not the widow, suggesting her husband was still living when she died. Children:

* Sarah, b. Haverhill 20 May 1702, d. Plaistow, NH 10 Sep 1764, and m. Haverhill 17 Sep 1723 Abner HARRIMAN, b. Haverhill 23 Aug 1699, d. c. 1770, son of Matthew Harriman and Elizabeth Swan. In her death record, Sarah is called the wife (not widow) of Abner Harriman. Abner's will was dated 14 Jan 1765, and probated on 13 April 1770. Sarah and Abner had eight children, born 1724 to 1743.

* Mary, b. Newbury 17 Sep 1704, d. "several years prior to 1758", m. Haverhill 22 Oct 1724 Josiah HEATH, b. Haverhill 21 April 1701, d. Haverhill 1758, the son of Josiah Heath Jr. and Hannah Sterling. In 1758 Josiah signed (with a mark) a short document, handing over his part of the estate of his parents, Josiah and Hannah Heath, to a Mr. Perkins, stating that his wife had died several years earlier. He died soon thereafter, as his inventory was dated 18 Oct 1758, he being called late of Haverhill.

* Abraham (twin), b. Newbury 29 May 1707, m. Haverhill, Mass. 20 Jun 1734 Mehitable STEVENS, b. Haverhill 22 Feb 1715, daughter of Benjamin Stevens and Abigail Bartlett. Abraham lived in Haverhill, Mass. and Plaistow, NH when young, but about 1745 settled in Derryfield (now Manchester) at what became known as Merrill's Falls. I can verify none of the following: they had ten children, born 1735 to 1758; she died in Derryfield (Manchester) in 1758 and he died there in 1760. As an aside, a Mehitabel Merrill, widow, died in Amesbury 29 Nov 1795, aged 78, making her close in age to the wife of Abraham. Same person?

* Nathaniel (twin), b. Newbury 29 May 1707, married in Amesbury 7 April 1731 (in double ceremony with his sister Judith) Hannah GOODWIN, b. Amesbury 21 July 1712, the daughter of Richard Goodwin and Esther Hadley. It is uncertain why the marriage record in Haverhill calls him Nathaniel 3d, unless there were two others of the name living in Haverhill at the time. The Merrill genealogy says he died in 1742, but I find no probate or vital record to substantiate this. Of interest is that a Nathaniel Merrill d. Amesbury 7 Nov 1792, but no age is given in the vital record. He is NOT the Nathaniel Merrill who died 22 Feb 1743, buried in the Walnut Hill Cem., West Newbury; that is a much older man.

* Judith, b. Amesbury 12 Sep 1709, m. Amesbury 7 April 1731 (in double ceremony with brother Nathaniel) John GOODWIN, b. Amesbury 16 Sep 1709, the son of Richard Goodwin and Esther Hadley. The published vital record of Amesbury gives the birth of Judith under the surname Morrill.

* Prudence, b. Amesbury 1 May 1715, m. Thomas STEVENS, and lived in Plaistow and Goffstown, NH.
