Born in the part of the Village Parish of Salem which later became and remained Danvers, baptized there on July 31, 1726. He graduated Harvard in 1746, and by 1749 was a lawyer, judge & law scholar in Worcester. He became a militia Major, and was a mentor to later President John Adams, who resided with his family, there. He removed to Boston about Feb. 1775, became a loyalist militia Captain, and evacuated with the British to New York, and then to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with his sons. He then went to London, with his 2nd wife and his elder daughter, and stayed in England for the duration of the war. His eldest son later resided and died there as well. After the war, James went back to Saint John, New Brunswick, with his wife, and with his other son and daughter joining him there.

First wife Eleanor (Sprague), died before 1754, perhaps in Worcester, Massachusetts. Eldest son James, eldest daughter Eleanor, her husband Rufus Chandler, and his father, John Chandler, all died in England. John and Rufus are buried together in Paddington Churchyard or Islington.

He and Elizabeth seem to have also had a middle son, John, b. Sept. 27, 1758, in Worcester.
