Ethel Oakes Adkins, age 85 of Chatham died January 11, 2017 at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born August 10, 1931 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Ford Alfred Oakes and Adeline Gibson Oakes. She was also predeceased by her husband, Hilton Ward Adkins; six brothers, Ran Oakes, Herman Oakes, L.D. Oakes, Jim Oakes, Wayne Oakes and Leonard Oakes; five sisters, Barbara Crews, Ernestine Kendrick, Elsie Childress, Carolyn Kendrick and Lizzie Yeatts; and one step-grandson, David Wayne Doss. She was a member of Oak Ridge Christian Church. She enjoyed quilting and cooking. She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Doss (Wayne); two sisters, Betty Osborne and Vicky Stiltner; four grandchildren. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Christian Church cemetery.
