Joseph St. Clair Harding, Jr., 76, of Keota, died Wed., March 26, 2003, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington after a sudden illness.

He was born October 22, 1926 in Des Moines, the son of Joseph St. Clair and Anna Elizabeth Mellor Harding. He grew up in the Des Moines and Lineville areas, where he graduated from Lineville High School, attended the South Dakota State College and Rutgers University, and graduated from the Iowa State University receiving his B.S. in 1954. He served his country in WWII with the Army from 1944 to 1946.

He was united in marriage to Helen Faye Holmes Sept. 5, 1954, in Keota. In 1970, the couple made their home in Keota.

He was a salesman for Continental Grain Co. for 22 years retiring in 1982. He worked for the state of Iowa as the state's sales manager for the Lottery. He retired from the state in 1992.

He was a former member of the Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder, Loins Club and the American Legion. He has also served on the board of directors for the Keota Senior Center and has been the co-chair for the citizens commitee for the Keota school bond issue.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Jerrold of Fairfax Station, Va., and Robert of Clayton, N.C.; one daughter, Kathlene McKinney of Newton; eight grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Glee Holmes of Keota; three sisters, Theresa Horne of Galveston, Texas, Eva Mae Wilson of Seattle, Wash., and Dorothy Haner of Lineville; and one brother, Charles of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Burrell; and two sisters, Lelia Campbell and Fern Ames.

Celebration of Life was held Sat., March 29 at the United Church of Faith in Keota with the Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Burial was in the Keota Cemetery with military rites.

Powell Funeral Home in Keota was in charge of the arrangements.
